چکیده

Despite growing concern among public health services and specialists in food hygiene, relatively little is known about listeriosis in man and animals. For this reason, the W H O organised a consultation in West Berlin, from 10 to 12 December 1986. The aim of this meeting was to set out the current state of knowledge about these diseases as well as useful directions for future research, and to recommend preven tive measures. The present report , written by the OIE representative at the Berlin meeting, offers a brief outline of these questions.

Foodborne listeriosis is a rare and very dangerous disease which is caused by Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium is found in the nature in very high population, but can cause disease only in certain groups of people. Listeriosis usually happens after consumption of unpasteurized dairy products especially soft and unripe cheeses and ready to eat meat products like hot dog by susceptible peop...

Effect of prevention measures on incidence of human listeriosis, France, 1987-1997.

To assess the impact of preventive measures by the food industry, we analyzed food monitoring data as well as trends in the incidence of listeriosis estimated through three independent sources: the National Reference Center of Listeriosis; a laboratory-based active surveillance network; and two consecutive nationwide surveys of public hospital laboratories. From 1987 to 1997, the incidence of l...

Risk factors for sporadic listeriosis in the Netherlands, 2008 to 2013.

Although the disease burden of listeriosis on population level is low, on individual level the impact is high, largely due to severe illness and a high case fatality. Identification of risk factors supports and specifies public health actions needed for prevention. We performed a case–control study to determine host- and food-related risk factors for non-perinatal listeriosis in the Netherlands...

Identification, subtyping and virulence determination of Listeria monocytogenes, an important foodborne pathogen.

Listeria monocytogenes is an opportunistic intracellular pathogen that has become an important cause of human foodborne infections worldwide. Given its close relationship to other Listeria species and its tendency to produce non-specific clinical symptoms, the availability of rapid, sensitive and specific diagnostic tests for the differentiation of L. monocytogenes from other Listeria species i...

MANAGEMENT REVIEW Listeriosis in Pregnancy: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention

Listeriosis is a rare disease that causes mild maternal illness, but can be devastating to the fetus. Listeria’s rare microbiologic features make it a difficult infection to diagnose and treat: it is an intracellular organism that hides within host cells. Because of the potentially severe consequences, it is important that obstetricians are familiar with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention...
